Welcome back to our Elements of Art tutorial series! In this lesson, we will dive in into form, the element of art that gives shapes dimension and a sense of movement. Form refers to three-dimensional shapes that have length, width and height.
In this activity, we will explore form by bringing you closer to nature through the creation of butterfly wind chimes. By folding, coloring and hanging paper butterflies, you will see how flat shapes can transform into 3D creations that fill space and interact naturally with their surroundings.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
By the end of this activity, students will be able to:
Understand form as a three-dimensional element of art
Apply basic techniques like folding, curving and assembling to create 3D forms from flat materials.
Develop fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination through precise cutting, folding and assembling.
Explore balance and space in a hanging artwork
Express personal creativity through unique color choices, patterns and the overall design of their wind chime.
MATERIALS NEEDED:
Transparent papers, Coloured markers, Threads, Plastic cup, Multipurpose glue, Scissors
Safety Tip: Use child-safe scissors and always have a parent or guardian supervise during cutting activities. Apply glue in small amounts and keep threads or small materials away from young children.
STEP 1
Carefully cut out butterfly shapes from the transparent paper. You may draw the shape first or use a simple template to guide you.
STEP 2
Decorate the butterflies using coloured markers. Add patterns, lines or details on both sides to make them bright and unique.
STEP 3
Fold each butterfly gently in half along the centre line to create a three-dimensional form.
STEP 4
Use multipurpose glue to attach the butterflies to the threads, then secure the threads to the plastic cup. Make sure the butterflies are balanced and spaced out evenly.
WELL DONE! 🦋 NOW FLY LIKE A BUTTERFLY
Hang your butterfly wind chime in a bright spot and watch it move in the air. You can also look at the other samples below for ideas and try exploring more forms, such as birds, flowers or even your favourite cartoon characters.
Wait, don’t go yet! Show off your masterpiece and share it with us. See you in the next tutorial 😍
